20 Direct Sales Lessons in 20 Years

After working in Direct Sales for 20 years, I have found a ton of HAPPINESS and also a ton of HARD LESSONS. I have learned A LOT about this industry, and what works and what doesn’t. I am sure that there are many more lessons than just 20…in fact, I had to make myself stop writing when I got to twenty, I could have gone on & on & on! Some are hard to face, and some are even a little cliche because they’ve been said over and over and over again. Here are 20 Direct Sales Lessons that stand out on top:YOU are the only person responsible for your success.
Your business, no matter how good or how not-so-good, is EXACTLY where you’ve built it.
Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re RIGHT.
When you hit a low point, you HAVE to keep working; a high point will be just around the corner.
Most people quit before they give themselves a chance to SUCCEED.
Take risks. It’s not easy, but it’s WORTH it.
Companies create incentives to help you build a strong business…GO FOR THEM, always.
Whether you have 1 guest or 30, give your BEST party every time.
If you say you’re going to do something, do it.
Attend EVERY possible training.
Don’t recreate the wheel, DUPLICATE what is working for others.
Find someone you want to MODEL your business after, and learn as much as you can by watching them.
Touch your business EVERYDAY.
Stay away from the anchors, and surround yourself with the MOTORS.
Dream in DETAIL.
WRITE out your goals.
HELP others, and start building a Team right away.
LEARN as much about the Company, the Industry, your Products, and your Clients as possible.
Utilize the RESOURCES your company gives you.
Complaining will get you no where. Cut the excuses and JUST DO IT.
Did any of these stand out to you? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below, or feel free to leave YOUR top lesson…afterall, I am always looking to learn more!
Happy Growing!~ Kim Denne

DUCKS QUACK, EAGLES SOAR

No one can make you serve customers well.....that's because great service is a choice.
Harvey Mackay tells a wonderful story about a cab driver that proved this point.

He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey .

He handed my friend a laminated card and said: 'I'm Wally, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.'

Taken aback, Harvey read the card... It said: Wally's Mission Statement: To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment...

This blew Harvey away. Especially when he noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Wally said, 'Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf.' My friend said jokingly, 'No, I'd prefer a soft drink.' Wally smiled and said, 'No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, water and orange juice...' Almost stuttering, Harvey said, 'I'll take a Diet Coke.'

Handing him his drink, Wally said, 'If you'd like something to read, I have The Wall Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today.'

As they were pulling away, Wally handed my friend another laminated card, 'These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio.'

And as if that weren't enough, Wally told Harvey that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him. Then he advised Harvey of the best route to his destination for that time of day. He also let him know that he'd be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights or, if Harvey preferred, to leave him with his own thoughts.

'Tell me, Wally,' my amazed friend asked the driver, 'have you always served customers like this?'

Wally smiled into the rear view mirror. 'No, not always.. In fact, it's only been in the last two years.. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth guru, Wayne Dyer, on the radio one day.

He had just written a book called You'll See It When You Believe It. Dyer said that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, 'Stop complaining! Differentiate yourself from your competition. Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.’

'That hit me right between the eyes,' said Wally. 'Dyer was really talking about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did more.'

'I take it that has paid off for you,' Harvey said.

'It sure has,' Wally replied. 'My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I'll probably quadruple it. You were lucky to get me today. I don't sit at cabstands anymore. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on my answering machine. If I can't pick them up myself, I get a reliable cabbie friend to do it and I take a piece of the action.'

Wally was phenomenal. He was running a limo service out of a Yellow Cab. I've probably told that story to more than fifty cab drivers over the years, and only two took the idea and ran with it. Whenever I go to their cities, I give them a call. The rest of the drivers quacked like ducks and told me all the reasons they couldn't do any of what I was suggesting...

Wally the Cab Driver made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like ducks and start soaring like eagles.

How about us? Smile and the whole world smiles with you... The ball is in our hands!
A man reaps what he sows. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up... let us do good to all people.

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar.

Power Boost Your Goals

Jenny, director AWHW http://www.AWHW.org

We've all got goals we're working towards, whether they're business goals or goals within our personal life. However, often these can feel as if they're millstones around our necks. Rather than feeling excited, inspired and fired up about achieving them, we can feel as if a goal is something we should be working towards, rather than really wanting to.

By POWER boosting your goals, you can reignite the passion you once had and move from really de-motivated to fully focused!
P: Positive. State your goal in positive terms; something you're working towards. Often we language our goals negatively, which creates a sense of something we're running away from, rather than running towards. For example:
"I'm scared of getting things wrong in my product launch" is negative language. You're looking back at something you're trying to get away from. Straight away your whole mindset and attitude won't be what you need it to be, in order to propel you forward.
Instead, try:
"I want to ensure my launch is as successful as it can be". This is forward-looking, positive and puts you into a much better frame of mind for going out there and achieving it!
O: Own It! How much do you really want and "own" this goal? One simple question can help you determine whether it's the right goal for you. Ask yourself: "On a scale of 1 - 10, how much do I really want to do this?" If you scored 9 or 10, great! If you scored less than 8, this goal is not for you. It's simply not grabbing you in the guts, in the heart - or anywhere else! Change the goal to something that really fires you up, that you're passionate about and will give you the sense of purpose to take action.
W: What Will It..... look like, sound like, feel like, when you achieve this goal? The more senses you can use to create what the end result will look like, the more you'll "feel it in your muscle" and you'll start to look for ways for bringing it to reality. So, what will you be doing when you achieve this? What will others be doing? What will you be saying and feeling when you achieve this? What will you hear others saying and how will they be feeling? Really build your picture of success with as much detail as you can.
E: Ecology. This looks at the wider implications of you achieving this goal. Are there any downsides to you achieving it? If so, what are they? How likely are they to happen? What can you do to overcome/minimize these? One person I was coaching recently really in another context was a woman who was seeking a directorship within the next 12 months. She wanted it, she was capable of it and she was ready for it. However, she was traveling a lot with work already and the promotion would definitely mean more.

She had to work through this to decide whether the goal was still compelling enough for her to go for it, given the "downsides" she'd identified. Being aware of these and preparing for them can help to make sure your goal and resolve is really tested for strength.
R: Route/Resources. So, what's the very first step you're going to take to move towards this goal? And the next? Plan out your steps as you would with anything else you're completely committed to and put dates next to them. But equally, don't plan your life away - what step can you take TODAY? What resources do you need to help you along the way? Information; training; mentoring; coaching; mindset - identify all the things that will help build your momentum, focus and skill.

POWER up and off you go!

Organizing Your Day with a Different Perspective by Annette Bourget

How do you organize your day? There always seem to be so many things on the to-do list that many of us get bogged down and become paralyzed into inaction. If this sounds like you, then organizing your daily activities will help.

Begin by looking at your list through different eyes. All that "do, do, do" can begin to look like doo doo (if you know what I mean). One way to shift your attitude about your daily tasks is to rename your list. When I started calling my to-do list my "inspired action" list, I immediately felt better about it. This gave me a different perspective about my daily actions. There are many names you can use; "business-building list", "get-it-done list" and "steps on the path to success" are just a few ideas. Try renaming your list and notice if you look at your day from a different perspective.

Having a daily list makes business sense, as it gives structure to your day and helps you to organize your time. If you make a list and realize that there is way too much to accomplish in one day, review it and see what can be put on tomorrow's list, or even put off until next week. This is not to advocate procrastination, but simply to be realistic about what you can accomplish in one working day.

Every morning, review your list and choose the two most important items. What two tasks are critical to bringing in revenue or absolutely must be done today? Flag those two and if at all possible, complete them before moving on to the rest of your list. Some people like to do the easy items first for the satisfaction of crossing them off the list, but an even deeper satisfaction comes from getting the key things accomplished. Imagine how you feel when you've completed the vital tasks for the day; everything else you do that day will feel like a bonus.

At the end of each business day, review your list. Cross off everything that is complete and re-schedule everything that is not. Not all unfinished tasks will need to be put on tomorrow's list; some can be rescheduled for a future date. Once you have rescheduled the remaining items, cross them off of your daily list. When you view your "inspired action" list with everything crossed off, you can end the day with a feeling of completion.

The last step is to look at your calendar and schedule the actions for tomorrow. Rather than just figuring you will fit these tasks in between your appointments and networking events, designate when you will do the tasks. You will be more productive when you actually make appointments with yourself to make calls, answer emails, work on your website or write your marketing copy. Remember, tomorrow is a new day with new challenges and new opportunities, and an organized perspective will prepare you for both.

Tomorrow is Payday for what we do today.

A great advantage in network marketing is that it is possible to do something today, and then get paid on it over and over again.

If we come into this business with a job attitude, seeking immediate rewards, we will be disappointed. Network marketing's strongest point is the chance for residual income. With this in mind, we might want to change some strategies.

For example, instead of pushing for a one-time retail sale, we might invest more time with this prospect in building a stronger relationship. Then, later we would approach the prospect about our business.

There is an old saying, "If you need money now, get a job. And if you want residual income for the future, start building your network now."

The Miracle of Personal Development by Jim Rohn

One day my mentor Mr. Shoaff said, “Jim, if you want to be wealthy and happy, learn this lesson well: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”

Since that time I’ve been working on my own personal development. And I must admit that this has been the most challenging assignment of all. This business of personal development lasts a lifetime.

You see, what you become is far more important than what you get. The important question to ask on the job is not, “What am I getting?” Instead, you should ask, “What am I becoming?” Getting and becoming are like Siamese twins: What you become directly influences what you get. Think of it this way: Most of what you have today you have attracted by becoming the person you are today.

I’ve also found that income rarely exceeds personal development. Sometimes income takes a lucky jump, but unless you learn to handle the responsibilities that come with it, it will usually shrink back to the amount you can handle.

If someone hands you a million dollars, you’d better hurry up and become a millionaire. A very rich man once said, “If you took all the money in the world and divided it equally among everybody, it would soon be back in the same pockets it was before.”

It is hard to keep that which has not been obtained through personal development.

So here’s the great axiom of life:

To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are.

This is where you should focus most of your attention. Otherwise, you just might have to contend with the axiom of not changing, which is:

Unless you change how you are, you’ll always have what you’ve got.

Would you be fired?

(this question was posted on our community board, Great Question)
Just a question to those who are not doing well with Avon and don't know what to do.
If this was your paying job that you interviewed for and you HAD to have a sales quota and recruiting quota. Would you be fired?

I treat my business as such and that is why I have good sales and lots of recruits.

I plan my day. I make a “To Do” list for each day. I also have a weekly plan for what needs to get done each week. This week I have to get books out since this is the start of C12 for me. I have check on my reps that did not order. I have to make sure I get my 3-5 recruits for this campaign.
My order comes wed...so I have to pack orders, deliver, label books etc etc.
I need to toss ..hang..(4 cases of old books)

If this was my job and I had a boss and I did not complete this stuff I would no longer have a job and therefore no longer have a paycheck.

Just a new way to think about it if you are struggling.

Why You Should Start Your Own Business Today

Six reasons to become an entrepreneur

Erin  Casey  John  David Mann  May 5, 2008
John was 53 when the bad news hit: His department was being moved offshore. Since joining the company eight years earlier, he had worked his way up to a solid position in middle management with a decent salary and great benefits. Now, he was out of a job.
Having spent his entire adult life in corporate positions, he knew he could go job hunting. But this was the fifth time he’d had a “secure” position shot out from under him, whether through downsizing, restructuring or other reorganization. With a wife and two teenagers to clothe and feed, he was no longer willing to trust his future to this game of corporate roulette. It was time to go into business for himself.
The Great Migration
Across the country and around the world, legions of people are abandoning their dependence on big business and seeking independence through their own enterprises. Every month, about 1 million Americans go through some type of job change or loss, and increasingly they are deciding to start their own businesses.
In a recent report titled Work, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, “Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses, through independent contracting or direct selling.” The report also cited a recent Gallup poll finding that 61 percent of Americans now say they prefer to be their own bosses.
6 Benefits of Entrepreneurship

1. Job Security. Only a generation or two ago, going into business for yourself was considered risky, and the safest route was to get a good job in a large firm. Now, working for a traditional corporation has become the risky option. Working for yourself has become the new job security. “If I’m working for someone else, I’m trading time for money, but I’m not building any equity,” says Duncan MacPherson, co-founder and co-CEO of Pareto Systems, a consulting firm. “As an entrepreneur, I’m the master of my own destiny.
2. Freedom. People love the benefits of working for themselves and enjoy the freedom they gain from designing their own prosperity. You get to choose when you work, how you work and with whom you work. Best of all, you don’t have to make the agonizing choice between time for family and time for business.
3. Flexibility. It doesn't matter if you're in a big city or small town. Entrepreneurship is an equal-opportunity employer. E-mail, cheap teleconferencing and a new generation of Web tools make it possible to run a fully competitive business from a home desktop. As a home-based businessperson, you can expand your business to Chicago, San Francisco, Hong Kong and London—and still make the soccer game.
4. Make More Money. There is far greater opportunity to make money by building your own business than by working for someone else’s. “Everyone has heard the phrase, ‘The American Dream.’ I look at it as ‘The American Reality,’ ” says Jeffrey Gitomer, best-selling author of the Little Red Book of Selling and the Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude. “When you’re in business for yourself, you write your own history, you write your own success story, you write your own legacy and most important, you write your own paycheck. Being in business for yourself gives you the opportunity to work your heart out for something you love.”
5. A Life of Greater Impact. In the Decipher study, 84 percent of respondents said they would be more passionate about their work if they owned their own business. The No. 1 reason they gave for wanting to work for themselves: “to be more passionate about my work life.”
6. A Second Career. The nation’s 78 million baby boomers are just starting to reach retirement age, yet they’re realizing that they can’t afford to retire. What’s more, they don’t want to. Dr. Mary Furlong, author of Turning Silver into Gold, says, “Boomers are looking for ways to give back. They are taking the reins of their own futures and redefining their lives. They want work that reflects their values and identity; they want to make a difference.” A landmark study by MetLife Foundation and Civic Ventures found that 50 percent of Americans in their 50s and 60s want to do work “that matters.”

Taking the Plunge
“Leaving the rat race is not as daunting as it may seem,” says author Dan Clements in his guide to worklife balance, Escape 101. “You’ll look back in later years and marvel at how easy it was and how much you gained for so little cost.”
So what does it take? First, let’s look at what it doesn’t take. You don’t need an MBA or high-powered business background, and you don’t need to be rich or to take a second mortgage on your home. Some self-owned business opportunities require expertise, such as consulting, or can take significant capital investment and possibly training, such as real estate investing and franchises; some can be started on a shoestring and prove quite lucrative, including direct selling and online opportunities. Many of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time began with no advanced degrees and hardly any startup capital.
But make no mistake about it: What you save in cash capital you will make up for in sweat equity and passion. The major investment in most self-owned businesses is investment of one’s self in the form of time, focus and persistence. You don’t need to be a genius at negotiation or a whiz at numbers. You need a burning desire and determination fueled by a strong dose of passion!

10 Steps to Success in Direct Marketing

If you're looking for a lucrative homebased business, direct marketing may be just what you've been looking for -- offering you the possibilities of making your dreams come true.

WHAT IS DIRECT MARKETING?

Direct marketing is offering a product or service directly to the consumer via mail order, Internet sales, personal sales, etc., with no middleman involved. Many direct marketing companies are now being operated right out of the home. Home based business is the waive of the future and can offer you a wonderful opportunity to actually be able to compete with the large, well established companies with large bank accounts. That's what is so wonderful about the Internet. You don't have to have a large bank account to succeed. You just have to have a little "know how."

* 10 Steps to insure your success

1. SET YOUR GOALS
What do you want to accomplish? Do you want a new home? Do you want to save for your children's college education? A new car? You can have whatever you want, but you must want it enough to do the things that have to be done in order to get it.

Set your goals, write them down and set a target date for reaching them. Set short term reachable goals and long term higher goals, yet don't set them too high. This will cause you to become discouraged if you don't achieve them. Work consistently towards accomplishing your goals each day, each week and each month until you reach your short term goals. When you have attained your short term goals, set them a little higher each time. Ultimately you will achieve your long term goals. Goal-setting is a must in every area of life.

2. BE SELF DISCIPLINED
Get up early each day. Get ready for your job as if you were working outside your home. Have a list of all the things you want to accomplish during the day. This will give you an organized approach to each day. It's amazing how much you can get done using a "To Do" list.

3. BE SELF MOTIVATED
Set up a schedule and stick to it. Be Enthusiastic. Enthusiasm generates its own energy. Energy and good health are synonymous with motivated, happy people -- achievers.

4. BE ENTHUSIASTIC
Positive thinking will literally be your key to success. You have to convince yourself that you can succeed at whatever you desire, because you can.

5. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME DISCOURAGED
Remember... The more "NO's" you get, the closer to a "YES" you become.

6. SCHEDULE YOUR TIME WISELY
A schedule is your roadmap to success. If you have no direction, you'll travel in circles and ultimately never reach your goals. Plan your work then work your plan.

7. HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Success is 90 percent attitude and 10 percent aptitude. Learn the art of positive thinking. You can do whatever you put your mind to. It's mind over matter. Your attitude will either guarantee your success or guarantee your failure. Remember ... you're only a failure if you give up.

8. SET UP AN OFFICE AREA
Most direct marketers work from their own homes, but it is still essential to set up a specified work area. Take pride in your business to ensure your success.

9. HANDLE YOUR MONEY WISELY
Set up a written budget. Set aside a percentage of your business income to put back into your business. This is a must. Failure to reinvest your money will result in the failure of your business.

10. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Get plenty of sleep, eat right and take some time to stop and smell the roses... Be Persistent... Persistence Pays Off... Don't Give Up... Most Businesses fail Just At The Moment They Are About To Succeed...

Sales is one of the highest paid of all professions. "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime."

Vitamins for the Mind by Jim Rohn

Happiness
Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want.
Happiness is not an accident. Nor is it something you wish for. Happiness is something you design.
How sad to see a father with money and no joy. The man studied economics, but never studied happiness.
The greatest source of unhappiness comes from inside.
Happiness is the art of learning how to get joy from your substance.
Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.

Think in "Numbers"

How many bathing suits are on display - high up above the warm sand storm beating upon the white shore? You see, I think in numbers. I think in numbers because we are in a 'numbers' business. It's all a numbers game. The more you add to your team - the more everyone wins. Let's cut to the chase - you have to put in 'numbers' because people will quit - they don't have the belief you do - people quit things everyday - you just have to keep putting them in. Some will. Some won't. So what. You've got big dreams and nothing or no one is going to steal them.

Tell Someone

You will grow. You will bloom. Tell someone about your business. Tell someone that you can offer them personal service and shopping from the comfort of their own home. Tell someone about the products. Tell someone your dreams. Tell someone you know in Avon that you'd love to attend Career Days and Hello Tomorrow with them. Tell someone.
